Biodata 

Paroo Nihalani was Chair Professor of English Language and Applied Linguistics at Universiti Brunei Darussalam until July 2009. He received his M.Litt in Experimental Phonetics and PhD in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh (UK). His teaching and research career spanning five decades included positions at National University of Singapore, Marathwada University, and the Central Institute of English & Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in India, Oita National University and Chukyo University in Japan, and the University of Brunei Darusslam. He is a former Co-ordinator of graduate program in English language at the National University of Singapore.

The empirical focus of his work has been on South Asian languages, particularly, Sindhi, Hindi, Malayalam and Indian English. He has published 8 books and his research articles have appeared in international refereed journals such as Phonetica, Language and Speech, International Journal of Phonetic Association (JIPA), RELC Journal, International Review of Applied Linguistics (IRAL), International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics (IJDL), World Englishes, Asian Englishes, to name a few.

He has served as a member of Editorial Advisory Board of international Journals such as RELC Journal, Asian Englishes, Asian Quarterly, Linguistics and Literature Review. He has held numerous visiting teaching/research appointments in diverse linguistic, cultural and educational contexts such as USA (UCLA, Illinois-UC), Australia (Macquarie University), Scotland (Edinburgh University), Nigeria (University of Port Harcourt), Norway (Institute of Phonetics, Trondheim), among several others.
