An informal reading group on Language and Emotion will be held regularly, starting from March 7th by reading two interesting journal papers. One of them is a psychology paper (Scherer 2005), addressing the issue of what is emotion; the other one is a linguistics paper (Pavlenko 2008), addressing the issue of bilingual emotion lexicon.
The PDF version of the two papers can be downloaded from our library E-journals:
- Scherer, R. Klaus. 2005. What are emotions? And how can they be measured? Social Science Information 44.4: 695-729.
- Pavlenko, Aneta. 2008. Emotion and emotion-laden words in the bilingual lexicon. Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 11.2: 147-164.
The focus of the reading group will be mainly on the defining features of emotions, and how emotion words are represented in our mental lexicon.
Supplementary readings:
- Pavlenko, Aneta. 2008. Structural and conceptual equivalence in acquisition and use of emotion words in a second language. Mental Lexicon, 3, 1, 91-120.
- Wranik, Tanja and Klaus R. Scherer. 2010. Why do I get angry? A componential appraisal approach. In M. Potegal et al. (eds) International Handbook of Anger. 243-266.
*The reading group will be arranged on Mondays, twice a month. If you have some interesting papers to share with the group members, please mention them and we can put them in our reading list, and discuss them in our reading group.
